A Weekend in Salerno

We have started our post-vacation workout early. Our comfortable Airbnb is in the quiet historic district of Salerno which is great, but that also requires a 15 to 20 minute climb straight up from the seaside including several steep steps.It is a holiday weekend.  La Festa della Reppublica, celebrating liberation from the monarchy after WW2, is Monday, June 2. It is celebrated much like Independence Day in the USA...parades, gatherings, bank holiday, etc. We couldn't see them, but we did hear fireworks over the water last night.
Because of the weekend's fabulous weather,  everyone is out and about, walking, biking, and eating with friends and family. However, the biggest pleasure of the weekend seems to be the water. The beach gets more crowded as the day warms up, and we loved watching all the water activities.
There was even a water polo game like none we've ever seen.....with kayaks!We're finishing up our stay here with a dinner at a favorite restaurant
(Jack's dessert) and a live broadcast of the Giro d'Italia's final stage in Rome. Congratulations to the winner of the pink jersey, la maglia rosa, Simon Yates of Great Britain.
Even Pope Leo was at the finish line. Top that Tour de France!

Parma

We took an hour-long train ride northwest of Bologna to Parma. This is another lovely town, very uncrowded except for the Italian school kids on their end-of-year field trips. We walked the narrow streets and alleyways, stopping at the Duomo and a café or two for wine.  We were very lucky to come across an exhibit commerating the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Parma from the Nazis and paying homage to the many partisans who resisted the occupation. It reminds us how harmful fascism and nationalism can be. It was also great to remember that once we were heroes. We leave tomorrow to return to Rome and meet up with our tour! A presto!
