Return to Lecce

Lecce has to be one of our most favorite places in the world. It is over 2000 years old and is known for its baroque architecture. The residents are loyal soccer fans, and the red and yellow colors of the Unione Sportiva Lecce can be seen everywhere. We spent two entire weeks here six months ago. This time we wandered the narrow streets, visited churches, Roman ruins and many cafes. Our favorite restaurant, Doppio 00, referencing the fine flour used to make pasta, is thriving and we caught up with our favorite waiter, Arturo.
We bought a "pumo" painted by a local artist to bring home. A pumo is a ceramic which resembles a budding flower. It is a common symbol found all over Puglia and represents prosperity and good luck. While many Puglians display pumos in pairs on their balconies, ours will live in our dining room.

Parma

We took an hour-long train ride northwest of Bologna to Parma. This is another lovely town, very uncrowded except for the Italian school kids on their end-of-year field trips. We walked the narrow streets and alleyways, stopping at the Duomo and a café or two for wine.  We were very lucky to come across an exhibit commerating the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Parma from the Nazis and paying homage to the many partisans who resisted the occupation. It reminds us how harmful fascism and nationalism can be. It was also great to remember that once we were heroes. We leave tomorrow to return to Rome and meet up with our tour! A presto!
