Italia Sweet Italia * Rome to Sulmona

This is the first time we have done an actual tour. There are only 13 in the group, and while we love our independent, let's- decide-tonight-where-we'll-go-tomorrow rambles, it's a nice change to be driven around and not worry about anything!
After meeting up with our group, we took a gorgeous 2-hour drive east to the mountain town of Sulmona in the Apennine Mountains (approximately 9000 + in altitude). We drove through the Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino, a
national park, which was spectacular!
After a rest and a quick happy hour in town, we are ready to enjoy what promises to be a great ten days!

Parma

We took an hour-long train ride northwest of Bologna to Parma. This is another lovely town, very uncrowded except for the Italian school kids on their end-of-year field trips. We walked the narrow streets and alleyways, stopping at the Duomo and a café or two for wine.  We were very lucky to come across an exhibit commerating the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Parma from the Nazis and paying homage to the many partisans who resisted the occupation. It reminds us how harmful fascism and nationalism can be. It was also great to remember that once we were heroes. We leave tomorrow to return to Rome and meet up with our tour! A presto!
