Bologna...Città di portici, chiese e tortellini

Bologna is a beautiful, ancient city with a heritage of culture, history, art and culinary delights. The Romans inhabited what is now Bologna as far back as 4 BCE. The city is home to the oldest continuously operated university. The University of Bologna opened in 1088. 

We visited several churches to see the ornate altars and magnificent frescoes.  We took a shuttle up to the Santuario Madonna di San Luca to enjoy the spectacular views of the city and countryside.
Bologna is also known as a foodie city, with tortellini and tagliatelle as the pastas of choice. Markets, food and wine shops and excellent restaurants are around every corner.
The city boasts 38.5 miles of porticoes, some old enough to qualify as UNESCO heritage sites. Want a good workout? Walk or run the 2.5 k portico up to Santuario Madonna di San Luca!

Parma

We took an hour-long train ride northwest of Bologna to Parma. This is another lovely town, very uncrowded except for the Italian school kids on their end-of-year field trips. We walked the narrow streets and alleyways, stopping at the Duomo and a café or two for wine.  We were very lucky to come across an exhibit commerating the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Parma from the Nazis and paying homage to the many partisans who resisted the occupation. It reminds us how harmful fascism and nationalism can be. It was also great to remember that once we were heroes. We leave tomorrow to return to Rome and meet up with our tour! A presto!
